Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. Plica. A Bespoke Treatment and a Brown Belt. Marc shares his story.
How did you get in to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? I have played sports my whole life enjoying baseball, basketball and football as a kid, and then I started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when was 15 years old. I was instantly addicted to the martial art. I would spend all my time training my fitness and skills or watching videos on YouTube. I knew from the start the BJJ would be a lifetime passion.
Tell us about the injury. I first experienced knee pain three years ago while training for a major competition. Without any experience with injuries I thought I needed to just "rub some dirt on it" and ignore it. For the next two years I had pain on and off but my training was never interrupted. However, about a year and half ago my knee began locking while training. I saw two different PTs and had many MRIs. Nothing seemed to work and I became very depressed because my injury was keeping me from training and from pursuing what I loved to do most in life. I made the decision with my doctor to under go surgery to shave down the 'plica tissue' and remove some bodies that were causing pain and inflammation. Two weeks post op the swelling had not gone down and the PT that I was referred to didn't seem to be helping, but hurting me, and I was fearful that I would never be healthy again and my competitive ambitions in BJJ would be over.
How did you find Bespoke Treatments I reached out to my teammates in search of help. My friend sent me the information for Bespoke Treatments as they had helped him recover from reconstructive knee surgery when others had told him he would never be able to train again. From the moment I meet with Dan from Bespoke Treatments he assured me I would be fine. For the first time in over a year and half, I truly believed that I would return to full form and be able to continue chasing after my goals on and off the mats. I credit Bespoke Treatments for getting me back to, and then keeping me on the mats. Without their help, I doubt I would have made a full recovery.
Who's Marcelo Garcia? Marcelo Garcia is an internationally renowned competitor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling - He has won the World Championships at all belt levels (blue, purple, brown, and 5 times as a black belt), and the Submission Grappling World Championships (ADCC) four times (2003, 2005, 2007, 2011). He was voted the most technical competitor in 2003 and 2007 at ADCC. And now you get to train with him!? Yeah - he's the most sort after instructors in the world at the moment and I'm happy to be back on the mats and trying to learn as much as I can from the master.
Tell us what happened on Wednesday night! Marcelo held the summer belt promotions, and after recovering from my surgery, I was able to earn my Brown Belt awarded by Marcelo Garcia. That achievement and the many more to come would be impossible without the support of my coaches but even more essential Bespoke Treatments. I wouldn't trust any one else with my health going forward and cannot recommend their services enough to those in need of help.
