Even the Fittest on Earth™ need physical therapy support when they are vying to be crowned with such esteemed recognition at the end of the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games.  In partnership with RockTape, Dan Giordano has been invited to join the medical support team for the East Regional’s at XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, where athletes will be competing for the five qualifying spots to the CrossFit Games.

The athletes at the East regionals have already been through a set of grueling WOD’s and have advanced to this stage by beating thousands of others in Canada and the East region of the USA.  The CrossFit Games events are made up of a broad range of functional movements that “move large loads, long distances, quickly.” These movements also form the basis of the athletes’ exercise programs. “Make no mistake—the CrossFit Games are designed to test, not train, fitness. The goal is to find the fittest athletes, not to produce an easily replicable workout program.”

The athletes engage in a series of challenges unknown to them until right before the competition. The combination of highly trained athletes and unknown events makes for an explosive mix. But the unknown can put stress on the body in a way that the athletes are not used to. Competing at the intensity needed to advance over 2 or 3 days of competition will take it’s toll. I’m excited to support them through anything that the games throws at them and keep them in the competition to the very end. Here at Bespoke Treatments, we already support the plight of many CrossFit athletes and competitors. We try to explain that these big functional stresses are an amazing way of exploring human physical potential, but if they are not careful, imbalances can develop and over time with the enormous amount of repetition involved in completing their WOD’s disfunction can occur. I hope to help the athletes realize that they need to work on some regular maintenance, ‘prehabilitation’ exercises and soft tissue management in order to remain in peak physical condition. With amazing tools from RockTape to Graston it’s really rewarding to help add value to athletes this weekend!
